Subject: Results Provincial-Regional resukts of the ALberta 2005 Bird Challenge.

Hello All
After much waiting on results I have finally received about as much
as I am going to get so here are the Provincial and regional results
of the 2005 Bird Challenge.
During 2005 a number of regional groups had a friendly competition
in order to see how many species could be found in each area and who
would find the most species in all of the competing regions.

During the process of compiling results 2 extra species came to
light for the Provincial Year List.
1) Mountain Plover was reported for the Medicine Hat area
2) Chestnut-backed Chickadee was reported by a visiting group of
British Army birders in Waterton in May.
This brings the Provincial total for 2005 to 340 species.

Regionally the Calgary area with the most number of participants
reported 300 species of which 295 were rpeorted by participants of
the challenge.
The Lethbridge area came in second with a total of 269 species.
Incomplete results came from the Medicine Hat area with a total of
261+ species.
The North-east Alberta group came in with a tying total of 245
species together with Edmonton. Considering the small number of
participants from this area the results were really good.

The Ft McMurray group also with few participants put in a valiant
effort with 174 species.

I uploaded a file to the files section covering the results for the
various regions showing which species were seen where and did an
analysis to take into consideration the differences for the various
regions because of number of possible species differed considerably
among the various regions.

The Red Deer group did not really participate and very incomplete
results are included in the summary table.

I also included species recorded in the Lesser Slave Lake region
because I worked there and a number of very interesting birds(Arctic
Tern, Pacific Golden Plover and Western Sandpiper) were found there.

An informal inter provincial challenge was also done with Alberta at
340 species compared to Saskatchewan at 307 for the year.

The next e mail will cover Individual participant results (which are
also summerized in the same file).

Subject: Challenge 2005 Individual Results

Hello All
Only a few people submitted list for birds recorded provincially and
as far as I can tell Joan and Malcolm McDonald had the highest
provincial totals at 302 and 301 species. Yours truly lagged behind
at only 296 species.
Other honorable mentions with totals equal to or higher than 270 for
the province are Mike Mulligan (276), B Wilson (272) and the Dolmans
at 270.

Regional winners
Mike Mulligan reported the highest regional total of 265 for the
Calgary region.

Richard Klauke reported 236 for the north east region.

Lloyd Bennet had the high for the Lethbridge area at 230.

Dave Nadeau the high of 223 for the Edmonton region. Fred Whiley did
extremely well at 220 considering that he was not able to bird for
health reasons the last 3 months of the year.

No individual results were supplied for the Medicine Hat area (I
suspect that Ben Vellner was probably the high count) or for the Ft
McMurray areas.

Congratulations to all of the participants.

Good Birding
Richard Klauke
